Maple Syrup, a sap derived from the maple tree, is a commonly used sweetener and a popular breakfast complement. Composed predominantly of water and sugar, primarily sucrose and some amounts of glucose and fructose, maple syrup also possesses small quantities of amino acids, vitamins, and minerals.
The primary components of maple syrup, sugar and water, are not particularly high in histamine nor are they known to act as histamine liberators. A study conducted by Maintz, Novak (2007) listed foods and beverages with high and low histamine content, and histamine liberators. From this research, no indication was found that sugary foods like maple syrup have a significant effect on histamine levels.
Further, a current publication (2021) in the Journal of King Saud University - Science, highlighted the anti-inflammatory capabilities of maple syrup, primarily attributing it to the presence of phytochemicals, which are also known to possess anti-histaminic property. Thus, it could be potentially inferred that the consumption of maple syrup may not raise histamine levels in the body. Rather, it might actually play a role in reducing inflammation, thereby potentially dampening the excessive histamine responses.
That being said, the individual reaction towards maple syrup may vary due to diverse responses of the body's individual immune system. Histamine intolerances can result from a wide range of biogenic amines beyond histamine itself, and individuals may have diverse sensitivities and tolerances.
In conclusion, eating maple syrup does not appear to significantly impact histamine levels based on its primary components. Nonetheless, further scientific research is required to provide definitive answers.
