Additional Informations
Green onions, also known as scallions or spring onions, carry a fragrant aroma and mild, sweet flavor, making a perfect ingredient for a variety of dishes. They are rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. However, they are technically not among the known foods that affect histamine levels by either releasing histamine, inhibiting histamine breakdown, or containing high histamine content.
Their primary components include Alliin, Quercetin, and Kaempferol. Alliin is a sulfur-containing compound that is converted to Allicin, an active compound that possesses significant antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. However, there's no concrete evidence linking Alliin or Allicin to histamine levels. Quercetin, a flavonol widely present in many vegetables, is known for its antioxidant properties. Some studies suggest that it can act as a natural antihistamine and inhibit the release of histamine in our bodies (1).
Kaempferol is another flavonol, similar to Quercetin, with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties and may have an impact on histamine level reduction (2). However, the concentration of such compounds found in green onions may be relatively small, and the actual impact on the body's histamine levels at such small dosages remains under study.
All this indicates that eating green onions may potentially have beneficial effects related to histamine levels due to the presence of Quercetin and Kaempferol even though green onions are not often mentioned in histamine-related studies, or identified as high histamine, histamine liberators, or inhibitors of histamine breakdown.
Nonetheless, individuals can react differently to different foods. While a part of this discrepancy is due to different microbiome compositions, other diverse variables might also influence. Therefore, any concrete decision about the impact of green onions on histamine levels is not available currently.
This product has not been researched well enough to publish any concrete information concerning its effect on histamine levels, our team is working hard on this. Data will be available soon.
