Lotus root, being a root vegetable, does not contain the high levels of histamine found in aged and fermented products such as cheese, wine, vinegar-based products, and certain fish and meat products. Furthermore, it is not listed as a food that can delay the breakdown of histamine, like alcoholic beverages, cocoa products, certain nuts, pineapple, papaya, and others. As for histamine liberation, Lotus root doesn't appear to elicit the release of histamine from cells. The common histamine liberators are mostly fruits such as citrus fruits, strawberries, plums, along with cocoa products, mushrooms, nuts, and invertebrate seafood like mussels and squid. Indirect evidence might suggest that Lotus root has the potential to lower histamine levels. It is rich in Vitamin C, Quercetin and other anti-inflammatory substances [1][2]. These compounds are known to not only restrict the release of histamine from cells but also accelerate its breakdown. Quercetin, in particular, is a bioflavonoid found in many plants and foods and is reputed to have a stabilizing effect on mast cells, preventing them from releasing histamine into the body [3]. Nonetheless, it's important to note that allergic reactions to Lotus root have been reported in some cases, indicating its potential to provoke a histamine response in hypersensitive individuals [4]. However, these occurrences may be shaped by individual variability and responses. In summary, eating Lotus root is unlikely to increase histamine levels and might potentially help reduce such levels because of its enriching nutrients. Yet, the interaction of Lotus root's consumption with histamine levels still needs more explicit research.
