Saffron, a spice derived from the flower of Crocus sativus, is known for its potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. However, its effect on histamine levels in the body is not widely studied, and conclusive evidence for its inhibition or release of histamine is currently lacking in scientific literature. One such source suggests that saffron may have potential antihistamine activities due to its crocin and safranal components. Crocin reportedly inhibited histamine release from mast cells in mice (M Amin, B Ananian, S Fadaei. 2004). Furthermore, a paper published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology suggests that saffron may exert anti-inflammatory effects partially by stabilizing the mast cells and hence inhibiting histamine release (Poma A, Fontecchio G, Carlucci G, Chichiriccò G. 2012).
However, these studies have isolated context and have been conducted primarily on animals or in vitro, limiting their generalizability to human consumption. Therefore, while some components in saffron may theoretically have the ability to interact with histamine levels, further research is needed to verify these findings and to investigate how consuming saffron threads may impact real-world scenarios concerning histamine levels in human bodies.
