Purple potatoes are a variety of potato rich in anthocyanins, a type of polyphenol compound commonly found in berries. These anthocyanins show potential histamine-lowering properties. In a study published in the Journal of Functional Foods, anthocyanins from black rice showed an inhibitory effect on histamine release (1). Despite being extracted from a different kind of food, the anthocyanins found in purple potatoes may have similar histamine-lowering properties, if not identical.
However, this doesn't rule out the possibility that purple potatoes may contain other constituent compounds that could possibly liberate histamine or inhibit its breakdown. Notably, all kinds of potatoes carry solanine, a glycoalkaloid toxin. Current studies concern solanine toxicity, yet there is no credible evidence linking solanine to histamine levels. Hence, with regards to specific histamine interactions, the impact of Solanine has not been conclusively researched (2).
With this information, it appears that eating purple potatoes may potentially lower histamine, although concrete findings on its complete effects on histamine levels are lacking. Further experimental research is needed for a more decisive viewpoint.
