Za'atar, a popular Middle Eastern spice blend consisting primarily of oregano, thyme, and sesame seeds, potentially interacts with the histamine levels in several ways.
Starting with the main ingredients, oregano and thyme have both been recognized for their substantial health benefits, many of which may help mitigate the negative effects of histamine. There is evidence that both oregano and thyme have anti-inflammatory properties. A study on mice indicates that oregano can reduce allergic inflammation, which is closely related to histamine reactions (Medical Science Monitor, 2017). Thyme, on the other hand, has been shown to inhibit the release of histamine from mast cells in vitro (Pharmaceutical Biology, 2010). However, these effects have not been conclusively studied in humans.
Sesame seeds, another central component of Za'atar, are rich in omega-6 fatty acids. While these are vital to health in the correct balance with omega-3s, a high omega-6 intake has been associated with increased inflammation (Journal of Nutrition and Metabolism, 2012). In this context, it's worth considering that inflammation can lead to the release of histamine, potentially elevating histamine levels in the body (Frontiers in Immunology, 2018). Furthermore, sesame seeds are known to be a potential allergen, which may induce histamine release in sensitive individuals (Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, 2005).
However, it's crucial to note that individual responses to dietary histamine, and histamine-triggering elements, can vary greatly - what causes a reaction in one person may not do the same in another. As such, Za'atar's impact cannot be generalized, and individuals with known histamine intolerance should experiment carefully under medical supervision. Additionally, due to the complexity of histamine interactions in the body, and the wide variability in personal responses, it remains challenging to predict the precise impact of Za'atar on histamine levels without further research.
