Tofu skin, also known as yuba, is a food product made from soy. Major ingredients include soybeans and water. Based on the ingredients, the histamine impact can be analyzed. Soybeans do not fall into the categories of high histamine content food, histamine liberators, or substances that delay the breakdown of histamine. They are generally considered safe for consumption for those monitoring their histamine levels, although some individuals may have specific sensitivities. However, the way the tofu skin is prepared can impact its histamine content. For instance, fermented forms of soy, such as tempeh or miso, are known to have higher histamine levels due to the fermentation process, which involves bacterial activity that can produce histamine (Flockhart et al., 2016). If the tofu skin is fermented or prepared with other ingredients high in histamine, the total histamine content can be higher. There is limited scientific literature exploring the direct link between tofu skin consumption and histamine levels, it’s safe to conclude that tofu skin, on its own, does not pose a significant histamine risk.
